Here’s the good news: to lose weight, you don’t have to chain the refrigerator shut! You also don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do!
In fact, if you do things you don’t want to do, it is 80% likely to backfire.
I remember the last time I tried to lose weight through denial… I think I ended up gaining 5 pounds!
I like to consider myself a Pleasure advocate! Without pleasure, all of the calorie-counting, dieting, and treadmill-action will not pay off. Here’s why:
Without pleasure, eventually you will get tired of the effort. It becomes frustrating and not worth it!
When do diets and exercise work? When you can get joy out of them. When they make you feel really good. When you are able to focus on what you are getting from them rather than what you are missing out on.
Eating healthy is a must for long-term weight loss, but just eating what you “think” you should eat and NOT enjoying it will not work. Your body was made for movement and exercise. Without it, you will not feel great and you will age faster and gain weight. But for exercise to work for weight loss you have to love what you’re doing!
The more you gravitate toward your “personal pleasures” the more you will find that they include healthy things! Many people mistakenly believe that if they give in to their pleasure they will eat chocolate ice cream and sit on the sofa all day long. Nothing could be further from the truth! In fact, I would feel HORRIBLE if I did that…and I think any-body would too.
What really gives your body pleasure? Here’s my list:
- Massage, acupuncture and other “body work”
- Talking and laughing with friends on the phone or at a coffee shop
- Dancing — taking “dance breaks” at home or work and going out to samba
- Getting a mani-pedi
- Going shopping — online, magazine, or window-shopping
- Going to a kick-boxing class
- Spending time with my husband and son (my “boys”)
- My job! (yes, I am lucky!)
I invite you to make your list and make your best effort to incorporate as much pleasure as possible into your life! Please share it in the comments below:
