We’ve all seen it: someone is so buff and fit and when we ask them if they work out they say “Oh, just some pushups from time to time…” Meanwhile Person B is puffing away at the gym every day for hours and they complain that they get no results! Why is that?! Workout results are partly due to genetics, but there are many factors in our appearance that can be “controlled” (in as much as the mind can control the body). Really, when results in the fitness department are concerned, it’s about 75% diet and only about 25% the actual exercise. I think you can get good results and look fit and slim doing just about ANY exercise you enjoy. A key factor is the enjoyment part. The more you stress about doing an exercise you detest, the more stress hormones your body creates – insulin and cortisol – and the more your body holds onto fat! Here are my top 3 tips to getting awesome fitness results: 1. Get into the flow…be mindful of what you are doing. Don’t think about what you were doing before or what you’re going to do after. “Just do it.” There’s a Buddhist saying I like “Eat when it’s time to eat and sleep when it’s time to sleep.” In other words, focus on the present! By staying in the moment, you will get a more intense workout. When we drift off into “la-la-land” we lose our focus and intensity. 2. Have fun doing it! By all means do not use exercise as punishment. Using fitness in this way is setting you up for...
I believe you can get fit without making yourself go to the gym… I believe you can lose weight and enjoy the process… I believe you can love eating healthy foods…and actually prefer them over chips and candy… I believe exercise can be fun… I believe you can find the time to exercise… How do you fit exercise into your daily habits? Do you wake up early to squeeze it in before work? Do you slip into your spandex after work? …or just on the weekends?… Do you ever feel too _____ to exercise? …too tired / too busy / too stressed out / too lazy / too hungry / … Try this: just give it 5 minutes. If, after the 5 minutes you still feel too _____, then you can stop. But I just am willing to wager that you don’t! Probably the exercise is just what you need. The body needs and craves movement! Have some fun and play in your body. You’ll feel younger, slimmer, less bloated, and more energetic! You have nothing to lose but 5 minutes! (…and maybe some unwanted pounds!) What sorts of movements do you enjoy doing? Dance? Yoga or stretching? Walking your dog? Bicycling? I like to have a list of options. For myself, I enjoy martial arts / kickboxing walking / jogging (depending on my knees and my energy!) yoga dance (all sorts!) Depending on my mood, I pick the one I most feel like doing and just start feeling the movement. Reading this alone will not change anything for you. I want to know: What are your favorite...
Have you ever caught yourself saying “I’m doing all the right things but I still can’t lose weight!” “But I eat healthy!…” “I hit the treadmill for 30 minutes a day!…” …and still no weight loss! Here’s what is missing: PLEASURE. Your body, or as I like to say, your animal has an internal gyroscope that leads you naturally toward things that feel good. Your animal does not lead you astray. You’ve heard of those “animal instincts”? Well, you have them! It’s just that we stop listening to them. The cravings you get? Their purpose is to satisfy a need that your animal has. His or her need to relax, or have fun, or procreate come in the guise of sensations in your body. You just have to take the time to become an expert in reading your own body. The stress hormones from boredom (same old boring workout routine, anyone?) lack of purpose in life hating your job being in a not-so-fun relationship hating your body are actually stopping you from losing weight! To lose weight, you must eat healthy food and move your body…but it has to be enjoyable. Pleasure is the answer to the stress problem. Or rather – you GET to do enjoyable movements and eat good food and lose weight! Wow! What movements do you get pleasure from? What foods make you feel great? (hint: it’s probably NOT what you think it is.) What does your animal need right now? Just be open to the answer you receive from your body and listen and be kind to...
