Osteoporosis and osteopenia are serious issues facing women (and men) as we age. Old bone cells naturally are absorbed into our blood stream and our bodies ideally continue to create new bone. Osteoporosis is a dis-ease of not enough new bone cells being created to replace the absorbed ones. The medications currently on the market to “prevent” or “treat” osteoporosis are fraught with problems and if it was legal for me to recommend avoiding them at all costs, I would! For natural treatment of this bone-thinning dis-ease, there are some things you can do on your own: 1. Eat a well-balanced diet: greens contain vitamin K1, necessary for healthy blood circulation. It’s the blood circulation that allows the bone to reproduce. Vitamin K2 is found in cheese; so eating a little bit of cheese is not altogether unhealthy if you digest it well. Cook with healthy oils such as coconut or olive. Avoid processed oils such as soy and corn and most fast food as they will lead to massive inflammation in your body. 2. Forget about calcium! Yes, it’s shocking, isn’t it? People in the United States eat more calcium-rich foods than almost any other nation, and yet we suffer with leading numbers of osteoporosis! Why? It’s not the calcium…it’s the MAGNESIUM! Magnesium allows your bone to absorb calcium. One of the best source of trace minerals like magnesium are natural mineral salts like plain – or even better gray or pink – sea salt. Salt is NOT bad for you: preservatives and “iodized salt” (read: “chemically-created salt”) are bad for you. 3. Get some sunshine and exercise....
